Gigant der Meere p.1 – Admiral Zheng He (1371-1433)

Little did the famous Muslim geographer, Ibn Battuta know, that about 22 years after his historic visit to China, the Mongol Dynasty (called the Yuan Dynasty in China) would be overthrown. The Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644) would begin. A Muslim boy would help a Chinese prince. That prince would become emperor and the boy would grow up to be the “Admiral of the Chinese Fleet.” His name… Zheng He. The ships that he would sail throughout the Indian Ocean would retrace some of the same routes taken by Ibn Battuta, but he would be in huge boats called “junks”. He would go to East Africa, Makkah, Persian Gulf, and throughout the Indian Ocean. Speak of the world’s first navigators and the names Christopher Columbus or Vasco da Gama flash through a Western mind. Little known are the remarkable feats that a Chinese Muslim Zheng He (1371-1433) had accomplished decades before the two European adventurers. A Muslim and a warrior, Zheng He helped transform China into the region’s, and perhaps the world’s, superpower of his time. In 1405, Zheng was chosen to lead the biggest naval expedition in history up to that time. Over the next 28 years (1405-1433), he commanded seven fleets that visited 37 countries, through Southeast Asia to faraway Africa and Arabia. In those years, China had by far the biggest ships of the time. In 1420 the Ming navy dwarfed the combined navies of Europe. Ma He or Haji Mahmud Shams, as he was originally known, was born in 1371 to a poor ethnic Hui (Chinese

    Das hat den Großteil der Zendernbestände Chinas gekostet. Es wurde soviel Holz für den Bau der Flotte verbraucht, dass man um 1470 gar keine Schiffe mehr hätte bauen können. Ein größenwahnsinniges Projekt wie so viele in der Geschichte der Menschheit. Weshalb man hier so ergebenen Respekt zollt bleibt mir ein Rätsel. Es war wesentlich schwieriger mit 30-meter Barken den Atlantik zu überqueren als mit solchen schwimmenden Städten im gelben Meer und im indischen Ozean herumzdümpeln.

    @netinfinity3 In a way, you are correct – China fought best against Chinese, because that’s how China was unified. Unless the warlords were defeated, nation building could not take place. Having said that, once united, Vietnam or Yuenan was invaded and seized by France. It was originally part of China, but was made into a puppet state or colony of a foreign imperialist power.

    @OnePeopleOneChina
    where can i find the mandarin version?

  13. netinfinity3 says:

    @m0rttal
    never use force against weaker nations, how about against vietnam? forget it… chinese fights best against chinese not foreigners….that is chinese history, what a pity…

    There was an English version, but it was since removed. The German version is far superior to the British version anyway!
    If you speak Chinese, the original version is in Mandarin.

    the only weakness that China has from 4000 BC until today is population. When you are talking about unifying 1.5 billions of people under 1 rule, it’s not an easy task. It’s lucky enough China did not turn into Europe where more and more countries become independent and separate from each other. Big power comes with big risk. When chinese warlord started their civil war, be prepared to torn apart.

    hey mohammed, are you asking,”can this army defeat kingdom of england, lol. at 15th century, england was only a weak nation with handful of knights, and soldiers no more than 200,000 men with population no more than 10 million, don’t even have the advance cannon and musketeer. this time china can mobilize over 1.5 million men at least. with such advance naval, what do u think mohammed? england did not enter into world power until the 18th century

  18. m0rttal says:

    not lack of governing it is that china is too peaceful to want to fight. Chinese confucious teaching teaches chinese to be peaceful so china never use force on weaker nations.

    Opium and even cigarettes are terribly addictive drugs! Many cities in China like HK and Shenzhen have already banned cigarettes. As Abraham Lincoln once said, “UNITED WE STAND, divided we fall!”

  20. Mamakayi says:

    China has never been defeated by European!!!!!!!… British came and brought to China and spreaded Opium in China!!

    during zhu di emperor’s time reign, he favor zheng he’s naval expedition. when zhu di die, his son stop zheng he’s expedition fear of zheng he’s influence and popularity. china is a sleeping giant rule by many incompetent emperors that lead to the destruction and weaken of china in history. not that china can’t fight the normad , european, and japanese. china had all the man power, resources, technology, lack of good governing.

  24. pokermaniac0978 says:

    well you have to be know chinese history and culture to know the answer, there’s many reason why china got defeated by the normad, european and japanese. government corruption, fraction among chinese themself which lead to civil war, emperor was blind to put wrong people in high official government that lead to destruction of china which emperor had no clue, such imcompetent of a man with superior power in hand use it to enjoy, and manipulate instead of strengtening the country.
