Israeli-News.com: Hidden truth about Israeli control of American Media – part (6/10)

This is part 6 of 10 of the documentary :P eace, Propaganda & the Promised Land . This is a 2004 documentary by Sut Jhally and Bathsheba Ratzkoff. The film provides a striking comparison of US and international media coverage of the crisis in the Middle East, zeroing in on how structural distortions in US coverage have reinforced false perceptions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict” and which “analyzes and explains how–through the use of language, framing and context–the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza remains hidden in the news media”. The film argues that the influence of pro-Israel media watchdog groups, such as CAMERA and Honest Reporting, has led to distorted and pro-Israel media reports.

@willjames66 you’ve got a lot of damn gaul. Don’t base evil Zionist Israel behaviour on what if Arabs may have done if they were in control. That’s just ludicrous self justification? for evil behaviour.

Just wait till Allen West becomes the? new US president, watch out !!

  11. @willjames66 –> You’ve been generous, and I really appreciate your willingness to share your side. Of course I cannot assume the Arabs would have been merciful had they won, which puts Israel in an especially poignant position of demonstrating either an almost impossible benevolence, or something short of that…. THAT is the drama? of the VICTOR, and it is not an easy place to be. Thanks again. I really do think you raise important points.

  12. willjames66 says:

@johnuio John I appreciate your thoughts. I need to call it quits at this point, but thanks for the conversation. I feel that Israel gets worse press than it deserves. So, maybe it needs to learn how to tell it’s side of the story better. The Pals have convinced everyone that they are the innocent oppressed native people and the Jews are some kind of colonial occupier. I invite you to imagine? how merciful the Arabs would have been had they won any of the wars.

  13. @willjames66 –> I think Jews will tend? always to be supported by the USA anyway, but even more so, and with less need for PR management, if it starts to become obvious that Israel can lead the world, not just in academics & medicine, but also in terms of how it treats its enemies after beating them. How a country treats the people who are beaten in war plays heavily into the respect that country receives. Nobody likes a sore loser, or indeed a sore WINNER. I think this is a serious point.

  14. @willjames66 –> At some point, the situation with Indians in the West and Mexicans in the Southwest deteriorated into outright WAR. The USA won those wars, and the Mexican and Indian PEOPLE had to submit to USA jurisdiction. A sobered analysis will concede that, realistically, even after? the victory, it doesn’t make sense to continue to oppress the losers. The tendency is to oppress, but it is something to be mitigated. This is a truism for victories that displace/isolate PEOPLE.

  15. @willjames66 –> Ok let’s take that as accurate up to the 3d sentence. Israel? won a defensive war. But looking at the broader historical context, the larger/consistent theme in the region has been a DISPLACEMENT of indigenous Palestinians. And when Israel later “earned” a dominant position, Israel has “won” without grace. If a country is going to occupy “won” territory, you can either occupy humanely or oppressively. It’s hard to find an apt analogy in history, but take America…

  16. willjames66 says:

@johnuio Maybe I missed something along the way. The UN in ’48 tried to resolve the conflict over the territory by creating a two-state scenario. The Jews accepted it; the Arabs rejected it and waged a war to exterminate the Jews. They tried again in ’67 and ’71 but failed. Who is being over-zealous here?? Even after Egypt’s sneak attack, the Israelis still gave them back the Sinai. Every other nation that has acquired land in defensive wars keeps it. Why are the Jews always the bad guys?

  17. @willjames66 –> But to get back to the present, I? also favor a 2state solution, but a REAL 2state solution, w complete authority over the West Bank and the forfeiture of ALL settlements, at a MINIMUM. Just as the very history of Zionism in the area is offensive to displaced Palestinians, likewise many Palestinians who accept a 2state may privately or publicly disagree with Israel’s right to exist, but the goal is to get a solution, not somehow get Palestinians to support Israel’s existence.

  18. @willjames66? –> You are not going to believe me, but I am also a Zionist, in the sense that I am in favor of a Jewish homeland in the Mid East. But I really think the trouble started w the overzealousness of the Zionists in the 40s. Under all the disputed circumstances, the Zionist attitude has been too haughty/sharp and petty w regard to the Arabs. It has not ALWAYS been futile to consider Arab acceptance of a Jewish state, and if it is futile today, the Zionists carry a substantial blame.

  19. @willjames66 –>? Ok, I appreciate that. Palestinians can’t be expected to see Israel as legitimate, can’t be asked to become Zionist sympathizers. But they MIGHT accept a fair 2state solution. All in all, though, I am not optimistic, because Israel (for too many years) has done the opposite of demonstrating its legitimacy. Israel’s attitude has been parsimonious, overreactive, and cruel, for too long, which does not engender true respect for Zionism.

  20. willjames66 says:

@johnuio John, the real problem is that whenever Palestinians draw a map of Palestine, there is no Israel. I challenge you to find a single image of a future Palestine that looks anything like the West Bank + Gaza. On their maps, Israel doesn’t exist. ? Neither does it exist in their textbooks (that the US and EU pay for). They teach their children that ALL of Israel is occupied land. Spend an hour on PalWatch.org sometime and see whether you think the Pals have any interest in peace.

  21. @willjames66 –> Finally: When you engage in a sharp debate, try to understand that an overfocus on sharpness and technical points can be obscene, really obscene, when the subject matter involves human beings in conditions of misery and oppression. In a situation like that, it is unseemly to bicker over small points. You are right about the rejection of 2state solutions, but the offers do not leave Palestinians w an intact West Bank. So your? argument is another sophistical insult, empty.

  22. @willjames66 –> Let’s assume there is vanity/distorsion? on the side of the critics. The residue of unconststable truth leaves no doubt that the situation in the West Bank has, for decades, left the Palestinians in an infeasible squeeze. It’s demeaning. The 2state solutions always stipulate that Israeli settlements will remain. Most Americans can’t even draw a map of the West Bank, and very few know how the settlements figure into the 2state solution. What do you mean “very well-informed”?

  23. willjames66 says:

@johnuio If you are truly interested in the happiness of Jews in the Middle East, I wonder if you could answer a couple simple questions for me. Why is it that Palestinians can live within Israel but not a single Jew is entitled to live beyond the “green line” which was only? a cease fire boundary, never a border? Jews were a majority in East Jerusalem until the war of 1948 when they were expelled by the Jordanians. Does Jordan’s act of ethnic cleansing mean Jews can never live there again?

  24. @willjames66 –> This is not a competition, not a debate. I don’t think I’m more American than anybody. And, unlike a lot of Israel critics, I want Jews to be happy in the Middle East. I’ll concede that both sides of this issue engage in self serving presentations of the issue. But let’s be realistic. The West Bank settlements and the way Israel overbears on Palestinian building permits amount to an abomination. Israel does not have the moral high? ground on this situation.

  25. willjames66 says:

@johnuio When you say “your country” to me, what are you talking about? You think you’re more American than I am? Maybe you think that believing all the hateful propaganda against Israel makes you? some kind of patriot. If you really care about truth and justice, you’re on the wrong side on this issue. You are being used. Look up the phrase “useful idiot” on Google (no insult intended) and see if it helps turn on the lights for you.
